How Novel Instincts Works

Page 1 NOVEL INSTINCTS PUBLISHINGFirst, the big question: Is Novel Instincts a subsidy publisher? No. We seek to fill a niche between traditional publishing, which is more and more closed to new authors, and subsidy publishing, which exploits the naivete of newcomers. Novel Instincts does not publish books whose authors are able only to write checks. We are selective in choosing which books may bear our name, because we are concerned to uphold our reputation for quality with both booksellers and book buyers. Should Novel Instincts choose to publish your book, our reputation for quality will benefit you, as well. The Novel Instincts DifferenceUnlike subsidy publishers (or vanity presses), at Novel Instincts: 1. The author retains all rights to his or her work. 2. The author receives all profits from the book, not royalties. Novel Instincts is paid simply for editorial and production costs. Any profits are passed to the author in full. 3. Novel Instincts does not mark up outside costs, such as printing. These are passed to the author at actual cost. 4. Novel Instincts does not work with any and all who will pay to get published. We will publish only those authors and works that we believe in. Our catalog may be small, but its filled with books of quality and integrity. Novel Instincts offers authors an alternative means to get their works into print. In subsidy publishing, the author pays for production costs of the book and any marketing costs which the author and the publisher agree are necessary to distribute the book, but the publisher also retains all of the rights to the book and pays only royalties. A book published under the Novel Instincts brand will be sold as a Novel Instincts book, but you will own the books and the rights. If the book catches on and makes it big, youre the winner; we just helped you get there. If your book enjoys some success and attracts a larger publisher to purchase the rights and publish the book under their imprint, great! Or if this process garners you a little attention and critical praise that you are able to leverage into acquiring an agent and selling your book (or future books) to a major publisher, you have come out ahead once again. Were not in this to get rich; were in it to help. In our opinion, too many authors either are taken advantage of by subsidy publishers or make serious mistakes in attempting to self-publish. The way we figure it, if youre going to self-publish, why not spend a little more and give yourself a chance of success? The goal of Novel Instincts is to give authors a fighting chance to have their works read by more than just friends andfamily. If, after your submission, we judge your book to have publishing potential, we will contact you to begin the process. Authors looking to break into the market may find Novel Instincts an excellent alternative to the (seemingly endless) submission cycle. Individuals, corporations, associations and non-profit organizations who want control over the content and format of their books also may find Novel Instincts an excellent publishing option. We provide expert editorial and design services without the time or headaches usually associated with producing a book.With all that said, lets talk about the other side of the coin. Theres nothing better than going the traditional route: find an agent, who secures a deal, which gets you published. Best of all, you dont spend a dime. Of course, that option will always remain open to you. Although this is a tough business, the possible methods of breaking into it are changing (albeit slowly), and wed like to think that Novel Instincts is a better alternative to the usual method of self-publishing that new authors attempt.One final consideration: There are no guarantees . . . with us or with a conventional publisher. The chances of making money are slim, so you should weigh your options carefully. When you really examine it, though, it still comes down to words on the page and how people react to them. Word of mouth still sells books. Still interested? Then send us your work.We are a publishing boutique with limited resources and staff. We will review every submission sent to us, but it may take 4 to 6 weeks for you to receive our reply. All responses will be via email. Please review our submissions section for our guidelines. Page 2 SUBMISSION GUIDELINESWe are currently seeking high-quality, novel-length fiction. We do not consider childrens, short stories, poetry, or erotica. Manuscripts should be in good taste. We prefer novels between 70,000 to 100,000 words in length, although we may accept a longer work. Please be sure that you send us the best version of your work. We do not consider works in progress. Please follow all directions and submission guidelines for your work to receive due consideration. Please submit by email only. All submissions should be in single-page format (8.5 x 11) as an MS Word or PDF file (PDF preferred). Do not include visuals or graphics, and please use standard fonts found on all PCs or Macs, such as Times Roman, Helvetica, etc. RequirementsPlease sumbit and label as individual files the following: 1. Query/Cover Letter (see below) 2. Synopsis (see below) 3. Title Page (see below) 4. Prologue (optional) (see below) 5. Chapters One, Two, Three (do not send more chapters) (see below) 1. Query/Cover Letter This letter should introduce you, interest us in considering your manuscript, and provide us with a sense of your writing history. Be sure to mention your book's title, its exact word count, and the genre. Include your name, address, telephone number, and email address. 2. Synopsis Use whatever style (point form, chapter by chapter, etc.) is comfortable for you to convey the entire arc of the story. Do not leave out important details to «build suspense.» Our editor(s) must know everything about your story in order to evaluate it objectively. 3. Title Page Please have the following on the title page: - Exact number of words in manuscript - Author's name, address, telephone number, email address - Title of manuscript - The words A Novel By and then the author's name or pen name If there is an agent: The agent's name, address, telephone number, and email address. If you have a Dedication, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, or a general Epigraph for your story, please do not include them with your submission, unless they are intergal to your story. 4. Prologue (if any) The word Prologue as the title, then the text. Let the text flow naturally from top to bottom on all other prologue pages in a single column only. 5. Chapters One, Two, Three (do not send more chapters). - The chapter number and title in the form « Chapter x : ___» This goes only on the first page of each chapter! - If there is an epigraph: The text of the epigraph - The text of the chapter - Let the text flow naturally from top to bottom on all other chapter pages in a single column only.

Page 4 THE BASIC STEPS IN THE PUBLICATION OF YOUR BOOKThe following is a basic outline of the steps in the publication of a book. The steps will vary depending on the contract entered into by the author and Novel Instincts. 1. Manuscript Preparation Your manuscript must be sent via email. Please prepare it in the one of the accepted styles for preparing manuscripts and in one of the popular word processing programs (WordPerfect or Microsoft Word).2. Library of Congress CIP registration The universal cataloging number is assigned by the Library of Congress. The application for this number requires, at minimum, a draft of the manuscript and two weeks time. 3. Cover and Text Design Normally, we will show you two to three options. 4. Editing All books published by Novel Instincts will be professionally edited. This necessarily includes spelling, punctuation, grammar, formatting, etc. Other content issues will be resolved in consultation with the author. 5. Typesetting (formatting & design) 6. Copyright Registration (if requested) 7. ISBN (International Standard Book Number)8. BarCode / Ean Bookland9. Printing & binding of the book Depending on the contract entered into by the author, the printing of the book can vary based upon its specific needs and target audience. Novel Instincts can print all types of books, from digital to conventional hardcover. 10. Marketing plan Depending on the contract entered into by the author, the marketing of the book can vary based on its specific needs and target audience. Many books have a very specific audience, and some authors know best how to reach that audience and market. But often, authors do not have this kind of knowledge or experience and look to Novel Instincts to guide them in their marketing effort. If requested, Novel Instincts can help an author in all matters of marketing (at a cost to the author), or the author can use whomever they wish. Since conventional publishers typically lump all first-time authors together and assign them to a PR group, many end up hiring an individual publicist anyway. 11. Order Fulfillment Depending on the contract entered into by the author, order fulfillment for the book can vary based on its specific needs. Novel Instincts can handle all matters of fulfillment. PRINTING SERVICESNovel Instincts will design and facilitate the printing of your book. The cost of printing your book will depend upon the complexity of the book, marketing plan and distribution effort. With present technology, you do not have to print a large quantity of books to make your project cost effective. Depending on the needs of the book and its author, there are two types of printing processes that can be offered: digital (print on demand, POD) or conventional (offset litho). DISTRIBUTION SERVICESNovel Instincts will facilitate the distribution of your book. The cost of distributing your book will depend on the marketing program for the book. Novel Instincts books are distributed to retailers through Ingram, one of the worlds largest distributors. Our POD books are produced and fulfilled through Ingrams affiliate company Lightning Source, Inc., and our conventional printing and fulfillment is done through BookMasters, Inc.
